Grade Equivalency

How does my home country's grade compare?

Canadian grades don't map perfectly to other systems. The table below shows approximate equivalencies. Your school will do a formal credit assessment.

📌 How credit assessment works
When you enrol in an Ontario school, your guidance counsellor will do a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA). Bring your original transcripts, report cards, and any leaving certificates. They will assign Ontario credit equivalencies. You may receive up to 4 "mature student equivalent" credits from your home country work. However, specific Grade 11–12 U-level courses (like Physics U, Functions U) almost always need to be taken in Ontario to satisfy university prerequisites.
By Country

Your specific situation

Common scenarios for newcomer students from the countries most represented in Eastern Ontario.

🇮🇳
Arrived from India
CBSE / ICSE / State Board
  • Strong in Math & Science — your foundation is excellent
  • Class 10 → you may enter Grade 10 or 11 in Ontario
  • Class 12 with PCM (Physics/Chem/Math) → likely enter Grade 11–12
  • Key gap: Canadian English essay writing style is different — practice this
  • You may need to retake Physics U, Chemistry U to satisfy Ontario university prerequisites
  • Your competitive exam prep (JEE level) far exceeds Ontario Math — you'll do well
  • Bilingualism bonus: knowing Tamil/Hindi helps in multicultural workplaces
🇵🇭
Arrived from Philippines
DepEd K–12 / SHS
  • Old system (10 grades only) → may need to complete more years in Ontario
  • New SHS system (K–12) → closer match to Ontario Grade 12
  • English is strong — not a barrier. Adjust to Canadian essay conventions
  • Math foundation may need Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U) — verify with guidance
  • TVL (Technical-Vocational) track → excellent preparation for Ontario trades
  • Academic track (HUMSS, STEM) → maps well to Arts or STEM stream
🇳🇬
Arrived from Nigeria
WAEC / NECO / JAMB
  • SSCE with Science subjects → generally maps to Grade 11–12 Ontario
  • English is strong — grammar is excellent; adjust essay style
  • WAEC A-level subjects → may satisfy some Ontario prerequisite equivalencies
  • May need Ontario-specific Grade 12 U courses for university admission
  • Strong performance in WAEC Math → solid foundation for Ontario Functions
  • Community connections: faith communities in Cornwall often help newcomer families navigate school system

All Newcomers — Key Steps
Any country

🇨🇦 PR Pathway Through Education
For families on study permits or work permits — understanding how education connects to permanent residence
1
Complete OSSD in Ontario
High school itself doesn't directly help PR, but sets up post-secondary which does.
2
Study Permit for University
After OSSD, students on study permits can attend any designated Canadian university.
3
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
After graduating from a DLI (Designated Learning Institution) — up to 3-year open work permit.
4
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
1+ year of skilled Canadian work experience qualifies for Express Entry CEC stream.
5
Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program
OINP has streams for international graduates from Ontario schools — strong pathway.

Common Questions

Newcomer FAQ

Do I need to learn French to go to university in Ontario?
French is a compulsory credit for OSSD (1 credit required). However, you do not need to be bilingual to attend an English-language Ontario university. That said, in Eastern Ontario (Ottawa, Cornwall, Hawkesbury), French is widely spoken and knowing it is a real job market advantage — especially for government jobs and healthcare. University of Ottawa is officially bilingual and has programs in both languages.
Will my Indian/Filipino/Nigerian grades transfer to Ontario?
Your school will do a Prior Learning Assessment. You may receive credit equivalencies for some subjects. However, Grade 12 U-level courses (Physics U, Chemistry U, Functions U, Advanced Functions) almost always need to be taken in Ontario because universities check the Ontario course codes specifically. Don't assume your home-country Grade 12 science automatically satisfies Ontario university prerequisites.
I arrived in Grade 11. Can I still get into university?
Yes, absolutely — but you need to be strategic. You likely need 2 full years in Ontario (Grade 11 + Grade 12) to take all the required U-level prerequisites. Some students take an extra "Grade 13" year or a fifth year to complete prerequisites without rushing. This is normal and universities understand newcomer circumstances. Discuss a 2-year plan with your guidance counsellor immediately.
What is ESL and do I need it?
ESL (English as a Second Language) courses are available in Ontario schools. They are assessed at levels A–E (A = beginner, E = near-fluency). ESL credits count toward your OSSD optional credits. If your English is strong (like most students from India, Philippines, Nigeria, or Caribbean), you may be placed at ESL D or E or bypass ESL entirely. Important: ESL courses should not replace university-stream English (ENG1D–ENG4U). Make sure you're taking the academic English courses as soon as your English level allows.
Is a Canadian degree recognized back in India / Philippines?
Yes. Canadian degrees from recognized universities are highly regarded internationally. A degree from Waterloo, UofT, Queens, Ottawa, or Carleton carries significant weight in India, the Philippines, and globally. For engineering, a P.Eng (Professional Engineer) designation from Ontario is internationally recognized. For medicine, you'd need to check equivalency if you return — Canadian MD is respected but you'd need licensing exams in your home country.
I'm a parent — what should I do first when we arrive?
Immediate steps:
1. Contact your local school board (CDSBEO for Catholic, UCDSB for public) to register your child
2. Bring all original report cards, transcripts, and leaving certificates (translated to English if needed)
3. Ask specifically: "What stream will my child be placed in — Academic or Applied?" (Always push for Academic if your child has the ability)
4. Ask: "What Grade 11 and 12 U-level courses does my child still need for their target career?"
5. Connect with the Parent Council at your child's school — newcomer parents find this invaluable
6. For Cornwall specifically: the Agapè Centre and Seaway Valley Community Health have newcomer support services
